Players (in return getting energy) or by exchanging crowns for energy in "Supply depot" The only way to get energy is to trade with other Clicking on it should make it appear as if you are still on your main hard drive, while looking in your RAM drive should show the actual location of the Spiral Knights folder. You can't earn energy. Mklink /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Spiral Knights" "D:\Spiral Knights"Īfter this is done, you should see what looks like a regular link appearing where you previously had your Spiral Knights folder. In the console, type mklink /D followed by the two places you want to link in quotes.Īs an example, this is what the command looked like for me: This can be done by searching for cmd on your start menu, then right clicking it and hitting "run as admin". this should result in the game now being located in D:\Spiral Knights when taking my paths as an example. Do keep in mind this works for the standalone version of Spiral Knights as well, you will simply have to choose the correct location for it.Ĭut the Spiral Knights folder from the target location into the RAM drive. These locations may vary for you, so you will need to find the appropriate location. My game is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Spiral Knights, my RAM drive is D:\. This is important for programs that process any sort of data, as most cannot follow regular links, but "understand" symbolic ones.įirst, find the two locations you will want to link. Instead of simply taking you to the folder they link to, they make it appear as if the folder is actually where the link is. If you click the link, it will take you from your desktop to the folder. To do that, you would create a link to the folder on your desktop. Lets say that somewhere on your computer you have a folder full of music, but you want to have easier access to it. Once again you might be wondering what this strange new term means.Ī symbolic link is very similar to a regular link. Instead, we will create a so-called "symbolic link". So, you just change the install location in Steam, right? Once you are done with that, you will want to get Spiral Knights onto your RAM drive. Do not make it too big, as the RAM used in a RAM drive is inaccessible to other programs as long as this drive exists. This size may vary, I have been able to work with a RAM drive 1100MB in size but you may need more. Once you have installed the program of your choice, use it to create a RAM drive big enough to barely house your Spiral Knights folder. Personally I have had good experiences with ImDisk. There are many programs out there, some free and some not, so choose one that fits your needs. To create a RAM drive, you require a program that can make one. As such, it is possible to assign a portion of your RAM the same role as your hard drive normally has. While they function completely differently, both types of storage are still working with the same type of data. Due to its speed, volatile storage is used as RAM, mainly to quickly supply information to the CPU as fast as it can process. Volatile storage on the other hand gets wiped if it loses power, though in return it tends to be much faster. Its main upside is that when your computer loses power (like from shutting down), its content stays intact. Non-volatile is the kind of storage hard drives have. Your computer uses two different kinds of storage, non-volatile and volatile. There is a good chance you have never heard of RAM drives and have no idea what they are. RAM has a much higher speed than any of the other storage media, so if you install Spiral Knights onto it, it will give you a massive boost in the loading speed of assets, especially if you were previously using a HDD. If you are using a newer SSD, which have much better speed, it will improve loading times. If you are using an old HDD, this loading will be very noticeable. This loading depends mostly on the data transfer speed of your hard drive. This applies to many parts of the game, even the UI for example needs to load its assets when opened. For example, if one of your friends joins you in a mission, you may experience lag when they load in, as the game needs to load the models and textures of all the items they are using. Spiral Knights runs on Java and combined with the games lackluster optimisation, this can cause loading assets to slow down your game, cause stuttering or even short freezing.Įvery time the game requires a new asset that wasn't used before, it needs to be loaded.
